Pop vs. rock

In this age of digital music, bidorbuyers are still buying music CDs and LPs. Perhaps that’s because we like to touch objects, to amass possessions, or to look at the pretty pictures.

Pop and rock lead the list of favourite music genres on bidorbuy, leaving all others far behind. For some mysterious reason, rock is more popular with the LP crowd, while pop is closer to the hearts (or ears) of the people who purchase CDs on bidorbuy.

The term popular music, or pop music for short, came into use in the late 19th century to differentiate tunes that appealed to a wide audience from classical music. The term rock and roll (later shortened to rock) appeared in the 1950s to describe the new style of popular music.

Without delving too deep, here are some of the most obvious characteristics of each genre:

Pop is easy to listen to. Its lyrics and structure are as a rule simple and it is usually performed by a single individual, often with back-up vocals. Gender-wise, pop music has an almost equal proportion of male and female performers. Mainstream pop sometimes has the negative connotation of being produced for purely commercial purposes, but, as any fan can tell you, there are loads of pop songs that sound like something that came straight from the heart. You can find names such as Madonna, Michel Jackson, Adele, Justin Beiber, Beyonce and Rihanna among the famous pop artists, to name just a few.

Rock is often associated with anti-authoritarian youth culture. It has a more powerful feel than pop, it is as a rule musically more complex and has more mature lyrics. Rock music is beat-oriented, with prominent guitars and drums, and is usually performed by bands. Those bands tend to be mostly male, although some have female artists, usually vocalists. Rock has evolved into several sub genres, defined by attributes such as: progressive, psychedelic, alternative, heavy metal, punk, and so on. Lists of the most popular rock artists usually include The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, R.E.M., Queen, Coldplay, and so on.
